Chasing Tables has touched my heart not only because of its musicality but because of its lyrics.
Chasing Pavements by Adele (Cover by Jamie Nueca)
I will tell my interpretation and opinion about this song and how it is related to Adele's experience.
"I've made up my mind
Don't need to think it over
If I'm wrong, I am right
Don't need to look no further
This ain't lust, I know this is love"
This part of the verse tells that the woman is certain that what she is feeling about the man was true love and not just lust.
"But if I tell the world
I'll never say enough
'Cause it was not said to you
And that's exactly what I need to do
If I end up with you"
She wants to say a lot to the man, and wants to say it when the time is right. If she told it to everyone except him, its not enough, because it will still be a burden in her heart unless she finally told these to the man.
Chorus:
"Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere
Or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place
Should I leave it there?
Should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere"
The woman's love for the man is full of uncertainty, because she knows that she is the only one loving, she doesn't know when the man will finally love her. She is asking herself if she should continue to wait for the man to finally realize her worth, uncertain if there will be really a time that this will happen, or should she should stop hoping and move on.
"I build myself up
And fly around in circles
Waiting as my heart drops
And my back begins to tingle
Finally could this be it?"
The woman gets herself into the right frame of mind and
summons energy (1)
But continues to love the man (2)
Waiting until she loses hope/ feel greatly deppressed from waiting (3)
Or until she grows old (4)
Hoping the time she's been waiting for will come
The song was inspired by an incident Adele had with a former boyfriend of six months. At 6am, after learning he had cheated on her, she went to the bar he was at and punched him in the face. After being thrown out, Adele walked down the street alone and thought to herself, "What is it you're chasing? You're chasing an empty pavement." She sang it into, while recording it, on her mobile phone and arranged the chords when she got home.
What I will advise to the people, who are like the character in the song, chasing pavements, is that don't waste your time/energy/life chasing what doesn't want to be yours. Your life is valuable. you are valuable. Realize that there are many people other than him/her who loves you, you don't have to squeeze yourself to someone who doesn't even love you/ doesn't see you worth.
Learn to appreciate what you have rather than chasing what you don't have.
